Canon PIXMA G4200 Ink Bottles and Tanks
Canon’s approach to reducing ink costs in its MegaTank line is to use bottled ink that you pour into a refill tank attached to the printer, the same concept that Epson uses in the Epson Expression ET-3600 EcoTank Supertank All-in-One Printer, Epson. WorkForce ET-4550 EcoTank All-in-One Printer, and other models in its EcoTank lineup.
Adding ink is an easy (if potentially messy) procedure with the G4200. Four ink tanks are installed in the printer, a black tank on the left of the output tray and three tanks for color ink (yellow, cyan, and magenta) on the right. Each tank is covered with a rubber cap. To fill the tank, you remove the plug, open the ink bottle for the tank in question, and insert the bottle nozzle into the hole on the top of the tank. You then gently squeeze the bottle until it is empty (which can take several minutes) and the tank is full. If you’re careful, you’ll be able to do this with little or no spillage – it’s possible that a small amount of ink will end up on the top of the tank, as I did when testing other MegaTank models.
Canon PIXMA G4200 Mobile Printing Features
It is compatible with AirPrint and Mopria for printing from iOS and Android devices and can print from the Canon Print app as well. Like all models in Canon’s G-series so far, it lacks Ethernet connectivity, a feature you will find on the Brother MFC-J985DW. The Epson Expression ET-3600 EcoTank Supertank All-in-One printer, priced the same as the G4200, also includes Ethernet, although it does not have ADF or fax capability. I tested the G4200 over a USB connection with the drivers installed on a PC running Windows 10 Professional.
Canon PIXMA G4200 Print Speed
In printing the text-only portion (Word) of our suite of business applications, the G4200 averages 7.1 pages per minute (ppm), slightly lower than the rated speed of 8.8ppm for monochrome printing. In printing our complete business suite, which includes PDF, PowerPoint and Excel files in addition to the Word documents mentioned above, we timed it at 3ppm, in line with other Canon MegaTank printers but a little slower for an all-in-one inkjet.
Canon PIXMA G4200 Output Quality
The G4200’s overall output quality, based on our tests, is above par for an inkjet, especially with regard to its text and photos; the graph is average. The text should be fine enough for any business use except for those requiring a small font.
With the graphic, I saw traces of transverse lines (a regular pattern of fine lines) on some of the prints. Colors are generally well saturated, although some backgrounds appear a little pale. The G4200 works well with thin colored lines, and in distinguishing between similar tones.
Photo quality is above the standard for an inkjet, with vibrant colors and generally good detail retention. I see quite a bit of color in the monochrome print.
Canon PIXMA G4200 Operating Costs and Conclusions
Like its MegaTank cousins, the G2200 and G3200, the G4200 has a very low operating cost of just 0.3 cents per black page and 0.8 cents per color page. Although the Brother MFC-J985DW’s operating costs of one penny per black page and 4.7 cents per color page are quite low compared to what you will see from a regular inkjet printer, the price is still significantly higher than the G4200.
The main attraction of the Canon Pixma G4200 Wireless MegaTank All-in-One Printer is its very low operating cost, which is achieved using bottled ink instead of cartridges. Its cost per page is about the same as some Epson EcoTank models, including the ET-3600 and ET-4550, and considerably cheaper than the Brother MFC-J985DW Editor’s Choice, with significantly cheaper ink than before. typical for an inkjet printer. While you can save money over time with the G4200 and the output quality is slightly better, the MFC-J985DW has a much lower purchase price but includes additional features. Nonetheless, the G4200 is a more reasonable choice as an all-in-one printer for either home or office use, or both.
