Canon Pixma G4600 Drivers– Refillable ink tank printers are nothing new – Epson has had their models for the last few years – but it is certainly a tacit acknowledgment from Canon that SOHO printers are no longer simply vehicles for using expensive ink. The problem is that you pay a little more up front for this type of printer so it is only beneficial to advanced users.
This review covers the top range, $ 559, Endurance G4600 available from Officeworks. The entry level G2600 costs $ 429.
Canon packs its printer well – lots of orange tape secures each piece during transit. But installation is straightforward – remove the tape, attach two printheads (color and black) and pour black, cyan, magenta, and yellow ink into the tank.
After heeding my wife’s advice to put the printer on top of the newspaper before filling the tank – she was always right – the filling began. Black – smooth, cyan – smooth, magenta – smooth, yellow – oops. Yellow ink all over my finger (stain for a few days – even nail polish remover can’t remove it).
To be fair to Canon, this isn’t its fault. I shook the ink bottle maybe a little too hard and squirted the last drop into the tank causing a slight burst of bubbles again. It doesn’t hurt the printer! Note that Canon cites 7000 color and 6000 black pages from the four bottles. I was tempted to test this, but international reviews beat me and confirmed its claims.
Once loaded, I put the fairly compact 445 x 330 x 197 mm x 7.2kg printer, plug it into power and press the power button. This goes through about 10 minutes of initialization and prompts a proofread. It shuts down auto and after that.
Note that Wi-Fi uses the 2.4GHz band which provides the longest range. Signal strength is fine up to about 50 meters.

It’s a typical office charcoal black, a relatively compact device and while it doesn’t matter, I really like Canon’s difference with the red, gold, white, and two-tone bronze / black on some consumer models. Can we add a little luxury to the office too or maybe a glowing ink tank?
Build quality
A SOHO printer needs to last years in a small office environment where you can’t count on gentle, loving care.
The build quality is commensurate with SOHO use. Of course, any heavy treatment will overload the plastic paper tray or scanner cover but it’s up to the job – certainly one step ahead of a consumer grade printer.
Paper handling / print quality
The G4600 uses a rear paper tray / hatch which holds about 100 sheets of A4, 80gsm and the front release tray holds 50 sheets. This is sufficient for SOHO use where you can see if the printer has paper or not.
It will print borderless on A4 and supports anything up to business card sizes up to 275gsm.
Most will use it for the typical $ 5 per ream, A4, bond paper and frankly while it’s cheap, it’s like printing on a sponge because it sucks ink and takes away any semblance of detail or gloss. Still, it is the most widely used.
If you look around, you can find lighter 115-150gsm coated stock (sometimes called matt or semi-gloss art paper) that gives that same page stunning sharpness and depth of color.
In standard mode on the A4 bond which uses a mix of images, photos and text, the quality is as good as the inkjet quality with sharp black text and detailed photos. The first page out is 20 seconds and the total print time for four pages is 80 seconds – excellent for a SOHO printer.
In high quality mode on the A4 bond, four equal pages took four minutes, but the difference in quality, not so much in color but in grayscale and highlights, was superior.
I tested the same image on layered stock in standard and high quality modes – there was no difference in print speed, but the color quality and depth were excellent – close to photo quality.
This is not a photo printer but permanent black dye and color pigment-based inks produce very acceptable results on 6 “x 4” stock photos, most importantly without the color ribbons you’ll find on many inkjets.
