The Canon Pixma G6050 integrates four ink reservoirs in a surprisingly compact three-in-one device and comes with six generous bottles of ink in the box. That’s enough to print 18,000 pages in black and white and 7,700 in color. It has enough space to fit 350 sheets of paper and can be easily accessed via a USB cable or Wi-Fi with the intuitive smartphone app for cloud printing and scanning. In short, it is well specified for use in small offices that need to produce a lot of documents and photos.

At around £ 300 (approx. US $ 380, AU $ 550) the Canon Pixma G6050 looks expensive along with other office inkjets with more features, until you consider the six ink bottles (three black and three colors) that come in the box. Consider that and the Canon Pixma G6050 looks like a bargain.

Design and build

The Canon Pixma G6050 integrates four large ink tanks into a very compact design. There is clearly a design advantage in eliminating large plastic ink cartridges as there is room inside for a fairly deep 250-sheet main paper tray. You can load another 100 sheets on the back tray and this is where the photo paper and envelopes should be.

Features and specifications

There is no fax facility, but there are many other key features. For example, it can print both sides of a page automatically, and it can handle all paper sizes up to A4. That includes glossy photo paper, envelopes and parcel labels, all of which can be tucked into the back tray.

The print resolution is 4800×1200 dpi, while scanning at 1200 x 2400 which is quite a high resolution and promises powerful copy functionality. The quoted print speed is rather slow at 13 ipm in mono and only 6 ipm in color.

So what features are missing? There is no ADF (automatic document feeder) or fax and no NFC connectivity or flash memory card slot for photographers. Unfortunately, there isn’t even a front USB port for printing directly from a thumb drive. Unfortunately, there are only four inks available, as other Canon printers often use five or even six colors to create photos.

Setup and operation

Setting up the Canon Pixma G6050 involves installing the first two fine inkjet cartridges, which seems surprising for a supposedly cartridgeless system. However, these two little carts don’t need to be replaced.

Once in place, you can pour ink from the bottles provided. The nozzles are shaped so that you can fill each tank to the top without spilling a single drop. However, it’s possible to pour the wrong color into the wrong tank, so be careful. The tank is closed with a rubber seal, although we don’t recommend keeping this thing on its side if you have to return it to the ink-filled tank in the tank.

Unlike similar Canon printers, the Pixma TS8050 for example, there is no setup wizard to help you connect to a wireless network or print a test page to check print head alignment. Canon’s companion app will connect you to Wi-Fi, so you can use your smartphone to type in the Wi-Fi password, but it won’t give you access to printer settings.

Unfortunately, the interface is somewhat unintuitive compared to most modern printers and the two-line display is limited. It’s a case of squinting at the small view and rotating through the many options using the two cursor keys to find and change each setting.

When you load paper into the tray, or load a new sheet into the back tray, the screen will ask you to select a paper type that is a bit boring using two cursor keys and on some occasions, we have to turn off the machine and turn it on again to force it to recognize the loaded paper correctly.

The Canon Pixma G6050 prints slowly, but steadily, producing around 13 pages per minute mono. It prints quietly and text documents look incredibly sharp and bold. The black pigment ink used stands out well, giving individual characters a sharp clarity down to a very small dot size. Pages of text appear with the consistency and quality you might expect from a laser printer, albeit at a much slower speed. And in terms of cost per page, it’s actually cheaper.

Color documents also show great consistency and detail. They appear at an even slower speed of around six pages per minute and look a little muted in color compared to other inkjets, but they are perfectly acceptable. The photo, however, does look a little too dim in terms of color. Blue and red are arguably more natural in appearance than many overly bright inkjet printers. However, the green looks a little faded and the black looks a little gray. The level of detail is high and in other respects, photo prints look great on photo paper, they just lack the color fidelity that Canon’s five and six color systems achieve.

We experienced only one paper jam during the test and managed to print onto envelopes and stickers without a problem. Duplex printing is slow, but it works and isn’t just limited to A4 paper. It can also duplex A5 and B5 pages.

Scanning documents to PC is a breeze and the 1200 x 2400 resolution ensures that they are nice and sharp. The photocopied document also looks like the original in terms of detail, however, there is a slight softening of the colors in the copied document.

Final verdict

Apart from luxuries like NFC connectivity and a front port for flash memory, the Canon Pixma G6050 is also equipped with a good scanner and auto-duplexing. The tiny display is a bit frustrating if you’re used to the touch screen interface and the printer isn’t fast at all, but it prints accurately and reliably and text documents look great. Photos print fine too, it’s just not as clear as some inkjet printers can manage. The main advantage here is the refill ink tank system which makes inkjet printing much more economical than before with cartridges.
