Canon PIXMA iP90 Driver Download– The Canon PIXMA iP90 is a good attempt at a more compact inkjet you can carry with you. Little is sacrificed in print quality, and machine speed is also good, considering its small size. It’s not cheap to run, and we’d like to see more attention paid to a power supply. Carrying a separate power supply – and possibly a separate external battery pack – does not result in true Print ‘n’ Go life.
The silver and black cases are slightly longer and thicker but less deep than mid-range notebooks. Fold the top cover, and it becomes a paper feed tray for up to 30 sheets of plain office paper. The small flap underneath drops down simultaneously, allowing the paper to slide from the front of the printer onto the tabletop.
The only controls are the power and paper feed buttons in the center of the printer’s top surface, and there is a single green led that indicates power and data reception when in use.
The socket for the USB 2.0 cable and the low-voltage input of a separate small brick power supply is on the lower left side. The connectors for the PictBridge camera and the infrared transceiver are on the right. There is an optional Bluetooth dongle that can be used with the device.
Although the iP90 is designed as a portable printer, the battery pack is not included. This optional extra costs £65 at the regular price and doesn’t fit inside the printer case, connecting instead via a small socket on the back of the device. It’s a tricky solution – it’s a shame that packages can’t be designed to be placed somewhere.
Setting up the printer is very simple. Lift the second blacktop cover and slide the print-head carriage into the center of the carriage, where you can service the cartridges. The black and tri-color cartridges squeeze very easily, and the printer automatically prepares them once you close the cover again.
Canon drivers provide a good range of features of the iP90, including manual duplexing, stamping and watermarking, and simple photo effects. There’s also Print Advisor, a quick way to set the correct parameters for common print tasks, such as printing plain text or photos.
The print quality for a portable printer is very good. Canon’s FINE printing technology produces ink droplets as small as two picoliters. Whether this or high-precision ink placement, the overall result is extremely smooth color transitions and clear edges in still images.
The text is also very sharp and tidy, providing high contrast to the next page. Bright and clean color graphics with no visible bands and good color fidelity. Very impressive results from a compact printer like this.
While you might expect a portable printer to produce extremely slow prints, we were impressed with our results. Although the printer is slower than equivalent desktop machines, it still reproduces our five-page text print in just 51 seconds, delivering a print speed of around 6ppm. Our mixed text and graphics page finished in 35 seconds, or just under 2ppm.
It’s no surprise that Canon started selling the BCI-15 and BCI-16 cartridges in twin packs. Due to the small size of the cartridge, it does not contain much ink. Canon claims eighty-five percent black pages or one hundred and 20 percent color pages. We saw 122 and 98 pages in our tests, respectively, so it’s not far off. However, keep in mind that printing black text also uses color ink to load the paper first and get a deeper black.
Using the page yield, we calculated black pages costing 5.8p and color pages at 53p, although most of the color costs came from the Canon PP-101 glossy photo paper. The black text image is on the top side. The Canon PIXMA iP8500, which was tested earlier this year, costs 2.2p per page. You’re paying for consumables for the iP90’s compact size.
