Canon PIXMA TR8550 Drivers Download– The Canon Pixma TR8550 is the latest in Canon’s line of award-winning Pixma printers and maintains a solid performance tradition. The Canon Pixma TR8550 is an incredibly feature-rich printer, containing everything the home or photo user needs to get his job done. With ample connectivity and more, it’s really surprising that the downside is that it doesn’t have a front-facing USB port. Not critical, but a little surprising.

  • 20 sheets automatic document feeder
  • Double-sided scanning
  • Automatic duplex printing

Print Speed & Quality

The TR8550 has a decent print speed for this type of machine. Monoprints come out at a reasonable 14ppm and color prints at 7ppm. Duplex printing is significantly slower and can often work at around 3ppm, but the fact that you get an auto-duplexer in an excellent all-in-one printer can balance this loss in speed. A borderless 10x15cm photo takes about 45 seconds which is standard for this level of machine, and there’s no need to rush to print a borderless photo!

As is often the case with Canon Pixma printers, print quality is a strong point. Your ‘normal’ home document that includes text and graphics will come out fine, more than acceptable for all basic needs. The photo prints are amazing and a real bonus for this machine, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better photo image on the printer without using a dedicated photo engine.

Cartridges & Operating Costs

The TR8550 uses five separate color cartridges, each available in standard and high-capacity variations (called XL). With one large black for document printing and four separate colors for color and image printing, this is the standard setting for Canon printers and a big reason for the excellent all-around performance. As always, we always recommend that you use the higher capacity XL cartridge to enjoy lower running costs, as standard capacity cartridges start to increase the cost if you replace them frequently.

Canon PIXMA TR8550 Scanner

I’ll start with the function that mostly drew me to this device in the first place – the scanner.

There are two scanning options with the TR8550: a regular flatbed scanner and an automatic document feeder (ADF) which sit on the top of the device, allowing you to load multi-page documents and scan them in one click. At least, in theory.

I will point out at this point that if you are doing a duplex scan – scanning both sides of the paper in a document – you will have to manually reload the pages into the scanner. Not a big hassle, but you have to be careful to get the orientation right, which isn’t very obvious from the graphic on the printer’s small screen.

However, that’s not my biggest complaint with the automatic document feeder. My main complaint is that it often swallows two pages at a time, which means it effectively skips a page of scans. No amount of fiddling with the paper guides that point the paper at the scanner seems to stop this, and it’s very annoying because it means you have to start the scan job from scratch every time you do this.

I’d say one in four multi-page documents fed into the automatic document feeder miss a page. As a result, I often find myself scanning multi-page documents manually, one at a time, which is the very definition of buying a dog and barking myself.

Unfortunately, the document feeder doesn’t behave on its own more often, as the scanner is fast (about 20 seconds per page) and the quality is excellent, whether you’re using the ADF or the flatbed. And I’m a huge fan of Canon’s no-nonsense scan utility, which does its job cleanly and then disappears, just like any good software.

If anyone has a tip on how to get the ADF TR8550 to behave, share it in the comments at the bottom of the article and I’ll buy you a beer if it works.

Printing

As far as bread and butter printing work, I don’t have any complaints. If you’re printing a single-sided document, the TR8550 babbles through it in a few seconds per page (assuming there’s no large image on it).

If you want to print on both sides of the paper, as polar ice-conscious consumers should, then it will take longer – about four times as long after spitting out all the pages, sucking them back into the printer. and spit it back. No need for manual intervention this time, the printer performs two-sided printing by itself.

Text and graphics quality is just right, with a bit of dithering and sharp serifs at the ends of your fonts. Even though I’m a photographer, I’ve never tried printing any photos using TR8550 compliant photo paper because neither should – you’re much better off ordering prints online, both in terms of quality and cost.

Speaking of cost, the TR8550 has a five-ink system. There is a blank pigment ink that handles most document printing, and four colors (magenta, yellow, cyan, and photo black). One set of inks doesn’t come cheap: the pigment black 580XXL costs just £29.26 on Amazon, while the four colors cost another £57.39. That is the most expensive price of £100 for a complete ink set, which is about the same as the price of the printer itself.

That said, the setup ink that came with the printer – which is rarely filled to the level of the XL cartridges – has just run out now. Given that I print somewhere between 20-50 pages per week, that’s not bad. However, if you’re printing a much higher volume of documents, I think you’ll find laser printers much more economical.

Extra

There are several additional features offered by this printer, although it is hit and miss.

Compatibility with cloud services like Google Drive and Dropbox was a big draw for me, but it proved to be another false dawn. The two services seem to be stuck by two-factor authentication. Even when I enter the confirmation code into the printer or on my phone, the printer refuses to go through the two-factor screen for both services. I suspect turning off two factors will save the situation, but why should I lower my security? This is bad software that was developed on Canon’s part.

Canon AirPrint support is a huge bonus for iPad owners like me, meaning that I can print documents from my tablet with no worries at all. Canon’s iOS app is also pretty fluid.

There’s a fax facility, but it’s 2019, so I use it as much as my VHS video collection.

One last feature I really like is the eco-friendly power mode. You can set the printer to turn itself off after 15 minutes of inactivity, and to automatically turn it on again when you send a print job. That – combined with duplex printing – makes me feel a little less guilty every time I look into the children’s eyes.
